Fillings, inlays and onlays
A filling is a direct restoration placed in the tooth in one visit to repair a cavity or small area of damage and restore normal shape and function.
An inlay is a custom-made indirect restoration that fits within the grooves of a tooth to repair moderate damage or decay, and is bonded into place for added strength and precision.
An onlay or overlay is a larger custom-made restoration that covers one or more cusps (or most of the biting surface) of a tooth, used when damage is too extensive for a filling but the full coverage of a crown is not required.
